Cedar boys finish seventh at State meet

OMAHA — The Cedar Catholic Trojan track and field teams put on quite the showing at this year’s Class C state meet in Omaha.

Last week, the boys and girls finished seventh and 14th respectively to wrap up the season and put a close on what will be forever known as the COVID-19 sports calendar with a bang, scoring a combined 43 points.

“I was so excited for all of our kids that got the opportunity to compete in the state meet,” Cedar Catholic head coach Chad Cattau said. “We had a lot of personal bests for our kids and that was what made the weekend a lot of fun. Whether the kids medaled or not, I know they had a great experience and they got the chance to compare themselves to the best in the state.

“I think the experience of the upperclassman really helped our first-time qualifiers as they got their first experience at Burke Stadium. They did a great job of helping out the newcomers with what to expect and how the day and events would unfold.”

The highlights for the Trojans include Carson Noecker winning the 3,200 in a state record time of 9:24.56 and grabbing second place in the 1,600 run (4:23.52).

Laney Kathol also earned two medals by finishing third in the 400-meters (58.99) and fourth in the 800 meters (2:20.84).

Jaxson Bernecker picked up points for Cedar by finishing with a seventh place throw in the discus (150-08) and Carson Arens took eighth in the 800 meters (2:01.32).

The girls 4x400 meter relay team of Faith Christensen, Sophia Reifenrath, Grace Reifenrath and Kathol took third place (4:08.27) while the boys 4x800 relay – Parker Albers, Noecker, Dagen Joachimsen and Arens – brought home a fourth-place medal (8:21.37).

“We were able to set three school records during the meet. Laney and Carson both set school records in the 800, and Carson also broke his own 1600 record.”

The 4x400 girls took four seconds off their previous-best time while the boys team set their own record.

“I also want to congratulate our other qualifiers for what they were able to accomplish. They really made this entire season a memorable and great experience for me and all of our coaches.”
