Cedar athletes earn post-season honors
Thoene brothers, Wortmann earn First Team All Conference honors
HARTINGTON — To no one’s surprise, this year’s MidState All-Conference basketball teams have a full contingent of Cedar Catholic High School athletes.
Myles and Tate Thoene were both selected to the First Team while Jaxson Bernecker was chosen an honorable mention selection for the boys.
The Lady Trojans were represented by Brynn Wortmann on the First Team while Brooklyn Kuehn was an honorable mention selection.
The boys finished in fourth place at the Class C2 state tournament this season.
“They are all great kids and all deserve the accolades they receive,” CCHS boys coach Matt Steffen said. “I am very proud of all of them.”
The senior, Myles Thoene, average 14.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.8 steals a night for the Trojans while the junior Thoene, contributed 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 2.2 assists nightly.
Bernecker, a sophomore, averaged 11 points and 6.5 rebounds nightly.
The girls also finished fourth at the Class D1 state tournament earlier this month and will have to reload without their two key seniors.
“Brynn is an all-around great player that will be greatly missed,” CCHS girls coach Craig Wortmann said. “She gave us so many options with her in and outside game and that is why she was so hard to guard. I think her leadership over the past year is what made this year go so well.
“Brooklyn was a force inside and outside this year. Her outside shot really came along this year and surprised many teams. I feel her ability to help break a press was probably the best skill that she developed this year. Both these girls will be missed as we move to next season.”
Brynn Wortmann’s nightly contributions added up to 16.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, while Kuehn, who really came on late in the season, tallied numbers of 9.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals a contest.
