BRLD hands Cedar season-opening setback

Posted in:

BANCROFT - It was a rough start to the season for the Cedar Catholic Trojans on Friday night. Traveling to face Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur Northeast, Cedar would be outscored 42-0 in the first half on the way to a 48-22 loss.

The experienced Wolverine linemen allowed their quarterback, Will Gatzemeyer to have a strong game in the air and on the ground. He had 400 total yards of offense, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for another three.

“We knew BRLD would have a very good team because they returned a lot of really good players,” said Cedar head coach Chad Cattau. “They have some very talented linemen and skill players. I knew it would be a great challenge, and we really dug ourselves in a hole in the second quarter.”

Cedar was down 8-0 heading into the second quarter, but Gatzemeyer and the BRLD offense would persist and score 34 points to go into halftime 42-0.

“After halftime though, our kids really responded and played well,” said Cattau. “We competed harder, which is something we didn’t do in the first half.”

Cedar’s preseason All-State tailback Jacob Keiser would break the scoreless spell in the third quarter after the Trojan defense stopped the Wolverines with Eric Hoesing recovering a fumble. Keiser would run in for the score, his only of the night.

Keiser would finish the night just shy of 200 yards, as the junior proved he can still be a menace to defenses.
