Blue Devils pick up first win at Homer
HOMER — The Wynot Blue Devils earned their first win in the 2021 football season as they rolled to a 62-26 victory over the Homer Knights Friday night.
Wynot built a 27-0 lead in the first quarter-and-a-half only to see the Knights rally back during the middle part of the game, before the Blue Devils pulled away.
Wynot’s record stands at 1-2, while Homer remains winless at 0-3.
Wynot’s offense was led by Dylan Heine, who threw for 172 yards and rushed for 84 more yards, while Zack Foxhoven lugged the ball seven times for 102 yards.
Homer was paced by Avery Overfelt who rushed for 96 yards and Jon Munoz who gained 46 yards on the ground and 35 yards through the air.
On defense, the Blue Devils got 13 tackles from Zack Foxhoven and seven tackles from Tate Guenther, plus a pair of sacks. Charlie Schroeder also recorded two sacks for the game.
The Knights’ defense was lead by Joesph Coffin, with eight tackles and an interception, and Avery Overfelt, with 10 stops.
The Blue Devils’ defense provided them an early scoring opportunity. Tate Guenther would pounce on a Knights’ fumble deep in Homer territory. Dylan Heine would score on a six-yard option keeper. The PAT kick hooked left, but Wynot lead 6-0.
Another Knights fumble was recovered by Zack Foxhoven at the 31-yard line that gave Wynot the ball right back. A 14- yard reception by Colin Wieseler and a 16-yard run by Zack Foxhoven put the ball at the one-yard line. After a short loss on first down, Dylan Heine scored on the next play on a three-yard sweep right. Carson Wieseler ran in the PAT and the Blue Devils increased the score to 13-0.
The Blue Devils’ defense continued to hold the Knights in check, and with 1:54 left in the period, Wynot would mount another scoring drive. Dylan Heine would find Charlie Schroeder on a short dump pass over the middle and he broke a couple tackles on his way to a 27-yard touchdown romp. Wynot led, 20-0, at the end of one quarter of play.
The defenses stiffened in the opening minutes of the second quarter, as each team exchanged a pair of punts. At the 6:30 mark, Wynot moved to add to the score however. Carson Wieseler would sweep to the right for a 13-yard gain and on the next play he would skirt the left end for 15 more. Tristan Gaarder would sack Heine for a short loss, but on the next play Heine would connect with Charlie Schroeder for a nine-yard touch toss. Chase Schroeder added the PAT kick and Wynot’s lead had ballooned to 27-0.
Homer would move the ball on their next offensive chance. A 23-yard catch and run by Avery Overfelt got the ball to the Blue Devils 25-yard line.
Wynot’s defense stiffened, but Jon Munoz kicked a 23- yard field goal to put the Knights on the board still trailing 27-3.
On Wynot’s next possession, a bad snap sailed over their quarterback’s head and into the endzone where the Knights’ Avery Overfelt recovered it for a Homer touchdown and the score stood at 27-11.
With a minute and half left in the first half the Blue Devils would answer. Heine would find Carson Wieseler on a 28-yard crossing pattern for another Blue Devils touchdown. Chase Schroeder kicked the PAT and the score at halftime was 34-11 in favor of the Blue Devils.
A couple of mishaps to open the second half would let the Knights back in this game. First a fumble that was recovered by Homer’s Josh Sanford gave them the ball at the 10-yard line. Wynot defense got tough, but on fourth and goal Austin Baker hit Jon Munoz on a swing pass for a nine-yard touchdown. Munoz also kicked the PAT to make it 34-18.
Wynot drove the ball quickly down the field but an interception by Josh Sanford ended the drive as he returned it to the one-yard line. Austin Baker then dove in for the touchdown. Avery Overfelt swept the left side for the PAT and Homer had cut the lead to one score at 34-26.
After the kickoff, Wynot took over at the 15-yard line and on the very first play from scrimmage Zack Foxhoven turned up the right side and bolted 65 yards to pay dirt. Chase Schroeder kicked the PAT and Wynot had reopened a 41- 26 advantage.
Wynot’s defense would dominate as they held the Knights scoreless the rest of the game. In the waning minutes of the third quarter, Wynot’s offense was again on the move. Helped by a 15-yard catch by Colin Wieseler for one first down and a six-yard run by Foxhoven for another and capped by a 29-yard option keeper by Dylan Heine the Blue Devils were pulling away. The PAT kick was good and the lead stood at 48-26 at the end of the third quarter.
Wynot would tack on a pair of fourth quarter scores. The first came on a 22-yard touchdown strike from Dylan Heine to Carson Wieseler. The second score was set up by an interception by Wynot’s Kailen Hanson and finished off by a 16-yard touchdown reception by Charlie Schroeder to make the final tally 62-26.
Wynot has homecoming next week as they host the Randolph Cardinals.
