Blue Devils keep their win streak rolling along

Posted in:

OSMOND — It took a little while for the Wynot Blue Devil football team to get back in sync after their two-week layoff against the Osmond Tigers Friday afternoon.

The Blue Devils would go on a 22-6 second quarter run in this game, as they pulled away from the home town Tigers to earn their fourth win in a row by a final score of 42-12.

“Our defense played well, giving up only two scores against a very good offensive team. The offense needs to clean up some timing mistakes. Peyton Wieseler had a great night for special teams as he consistently put the ball in the end zone on kickoff and had a 65-yard punt.” commented Wynot head coach Steve Heimes.

Wynot‘s offense would amass over 500 total yards of offense with 416 on the ground. Anthony Haberman led the way with 261 yards and Owen Sudbeck ran for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Trystan Heimes led the receiving corps with five catches for 60 yards.

Osmond got a solid game from Patrick Vinson who completed 13 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. Alex Vinson had a touchdown reception to help the Tigers offense.

On defense, the Blue Devil were in control throughout, lead by Garrett Lange, Trystan Heimes and Anthony Haberman. Jack Kuchta had an interception for the Blue Devils.

The defense for the Tigers was led by Alex Vinson who lead all tacklers with 17 tackles. Bryan Solorzano had a fumble recovery and an interception for the Tigers.

In the opening quarter, both teams had trouble finding any offensive consistency. After a trio of punt exchanges by each team, the Blue Devils would finally mount a drive in the final two minutes of the period. Wynot got their running game going helped by a pair of first down runs each by Owen Sudbeck and Anthony Haberman. Haberman would cap the drive as he dove in from the 1-yard line to put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard first. The PAT run was stopped and Wynot lead 6-0 at the end of one quarter of play.

Osmond opened the second quarter with a scoring run of their own. Led by the hard running of Alex Vinson, the Tigers drove deep into Blue Devil territory. A 5-yard swing pass from Patrick Vinson to Alex Vinson capped the drive for Osmond. The PAT run was stopped as the score was knotted at 6-6.

After a nice kickoff return by Anthony Haberman, the Blue Devils would move the ball quickly downfield behind first down runs by Owen Sudbeck and Haberman. Trystan Heimes’ 9-yard catch gave Wynot the ball at the Osmond 20 yardline. A 5-yard motion penalty set the ball back to the 25.

Haberman then found Trystan Heimes in the seam up the right side and he raced the final 25 yards to paydirt. The PAT pass was no good and the Blue Devils lead 12- 6.

It was three-and-out for the Tigers on their next offensive series.

The Blue Devil offense looked to be in trouble after a bad snap but a 32-yard completion from Haberman to Colin Wieseler bailed them out. Two plays later, the duo hooked up for a 14-yard touchdown pass. An option pitch to Owen Sudbeck added the PAT as Wynot had some breathing room, leading 20-6.

Wynot added one more score in the final minute of the half when Anthony Haberman broke up the middle on a quarterback draw play for 54 yards, down to the Osmond 3-yard line. The Blue Devil offensive line pushed the pile as Haberman bulled in for the 3-yard touchdown. Haberman also ran in the PAT to give Wynot the 28-6 halftime advantage.

Wynot‘a defense would toughen up in the third quarter. The Osmond defense also stiffened as they turned away a Blue Devil drive with a Bryan Solorzano fumble recovery.

However, Osmond gave the ball right back on a fumble that Anthony Haberman pounced on for the Blue Devils. A Bryan Solorzano interception would stop another Blue Devils drive as well. Wynot’s offense was able to put together a nineplay 55-yard drive for a score late in the period. Helped along the way by a 20-yard catch and run by Owen Sudbeck and the scrambling of Anthony Haberman, the Blue Devils would cap the drive with a 7-yard run around the right side by Owen Sudbeck. Haberman’s pass then fit in a tight window to Sudbeck for the PAT as Wynot’s lead had ballooned to 36-6.

Osmond got their final touchdown of the night on a nice 30-yard run by Patrick Vinson. The PAT run was stuffed making the score 36-12 going into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, the Blue Devils defense would stop a trio of Tiger drives. Two drives by sacks on fourth down plays by Garrett Lange and Peyton Wieseler, and another on a interception in the endzone by Jack Kuchta.

At the five-minute mark, the Blue Devils added their final score on an option pitch from Anthony Haberman to Owen Sudbeck from five yards out. The PAT run came up short making the final score 42- 12 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Wynot will try to keep their winning streak going as they host Winside for their final regular season game Friday.
