Blue Devils fall to state-rated Humphrey St. Francis
WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils hosted one of the toprated teams in D-2 football Friday night and ended up falling 40-6 to them.
The Flyers didn’t take long getting on the scoreboard in this one.
On the very first play Spencer Engel bolted up the middle for a 53-yard touchdown scamper. The PAT attempt failed, but Humphrey led 6-0 with less than a minute gone in the game.
Wynot would go three-andout and were forced to punt on their first series.
The Flyers once again moved the ball quickly down field. Tanner Pfeifer rolled right and found Kegan Hackerot all alone on a 25-yard throwback pass for the their second touchdown.
Spencer Engel powered his way in for the PAT as St. Francis increased their lead to 14-0.
Wynot was able to get a couple first downs on their next possession but the drive stalled.
At the 6:48 mark Tyrel Wegener broke free on a counter play and raced 50 yards to paydirt. Pfeifer hit Wegener for the PAT making the score 22-0.
Wynot’s next possession ended with a Spencer Engel interception.
St. Francis gave the ball right back on an interception by Charlie Schroeder for the Blue Devils.
The first quarter ended with the Flyers leading 22-0. The second quarter began with the Flyers on the move again.
A 17-yard pass completion and a first down run by Pfeifer moved the ball deep into Blue Devil territory. St. Francis then capped the drive with a two-yard play action pass from Pfeifer to Kegan Hackerott. The PAT failed but the Flyers were in command leading 28-0.
The Blue Devil offense would show signs of life on their next offensive set. First downs by Zack Foxhoven and Dylan Heine moved the ball into the Flyer red zone. The Blue Devils would complete the drive when Heine found Foxhoven up the right side for a 19 yard touchdown pass. The PAT failed but, Wynot was on the board trailing 28-6 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the two teams exchanging several punts. Late in the quarter the Flyers would add a score, which was set up by Spencer Engel’s second pass interception and return. He carried to the Blue Devils 13 yard line, giving the Flyers an easy shot at another score.
Three plays later a threeyard quarterback sneak by Tanner Pfeifer cashed in the drive. Humphrey’s lead had increased to 34-6 as the third period ended.
The Flyers would put up the final score of game at the mid point of the fourth quarter. Behind the hard running of Spencer Engel and Emerson Krings moved the ball into the Blue Devil redzone.
St. Francis finished the drive on a bootleg pass from Pfeifer to Colten Wietfeld. The PAT pass was no good to make the final score 40-6 in favor of the Flyers.
It gets no easier for the Blue Devils next week as they battle another rated team in the Bloomfield Bees.
