Bancroft-Rosalie run past Cardinals in scoring explosion
RANDOLPH - It was a scoring explosion here on Sept. 27 as Bancroft-Rosalie and Randolph combined for 78 points . . . in the first quarter of the football game alone.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Panthers put up 62 of the first-quarter points and went into the second 12 minutes with a 62-16 advantage on their way to a 74-38 win to remain unbeaten on the season and drop Randolph to 0-5.
Despite the B-R scoring onslaught in the first frame, Randolph kept competing and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way.
The Panthers went up 14-0 in the ballgame when the Cardinals answered.
Dayton Winkelbauer hit Ryan Engel on a 22-yard pass play then ran in the two-point conversion to bring Randolph back to within 14-8.
Bancroft-Rosalie extended the lead on the ensuing kickoff as Braylon Wegner rambled 72 yards with the kick for a touchdown and after the conversion run, the Panthers were up 22-8.
The lead would grow to 62-8 when Engel took the kickoff after B-R scored its 62nd point and took it back 67 yards for a touchdown.
Shaw Backer blasted in for the conversion and the score was 62-16.
Neither team would score in the second quarter and the score remained until the Cardinals hit pay dirt again in the third when Jaylen Junck hit Engel for his third touchdown of the night on a 23-yard pass and after Milo Rayford ran in the two-point try, the score was 62-22.
Junck hit Eli Bermel on a seven-yard scoring pass to open the fourth quarter, and the score was 62-30.
The Panthers would score on a long pass to make it 68-30, but the Cardinals weren’t finished.
Junck scored on a six-yard run then ran in the two-point try to end the Randolph scoring for the evening and make it 68-38.
One offensive highlight for Randolph was the Cardinals had two kickoff returners go over 100 yards in returns.
Shaw Backer brought back five kicks for 110 yards and Ryan Engel returned two for 101 including his 67-yard return for a touchdown.
The Cardinals will hit the road for a couple of weeks traveling to Lyons Oct. 4 to take on 2-3 Lyons-Decatur Northeast then heading to Walthill Oct. 11 to take on the Blujays.
