Area golf teams are finally getting on the course
WAYNE — Spring golf in Nebraska is a scheduling nightmare, to say the least.
Hard winters and inclement weather make March and April an adventure at best and a struggle at worst.
Hartington-Newcastle, Cedar Catholic, Crofton/Wynot and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge all converged at Cedar View Country Club in Laurel April 11 for the opening tournament of the season for most of the teams.
“We hadn’t really been on the course yet,” longtime HNS coach Ken Kneifl said. “It was kind of nice to just get out there and see what we have — naturally, we have a lot of work to do and a short time to get it done.”
Pierce won the team title after firing a 345 over 18 holes, just one shot better than Tekamah-Herman at 346.
Ponca was a stroke behind the Tigers and Cedar Catholic finished in fourth with a 364.
Hartington-Newcastle was seventh at 386 while Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was 11th after carding a 428.
Ben Jorgensen of Tri County Northeast won a scorecard playoff over Brody Rogers of Tekamah-Herman after both players fired an 80.
Jay Steffen from Cedar Catholic was the lone area golfer in the Top 10.
