Area athletes take part in All-Star games
NORFOLK — Riley Sudbeck knows he has a lot of work to do if he’s going to make an impression on his new college football coaches The 2024 Hartington-Newcastle graduate signed a letter of intent this spring to play football for NAIA national powerhouse Northwestern.
He made quite an impression in the final high school football game of his career Saturday when he helped lead the Red All Stars in Saturday’s Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic.
Defense dominated the contest, but Sudbeck was able to put some points on the board for the Red Team with just under two minutes left in the game. Sudbeck’s quarteback keeper brought his team to within one score of the White All Stars, 21-14.
The Reds fourth quarter rally fell short on their next drive when Sudbeck’s pass was tipped by Elgin/Pope John’s Dylon Lueking and then intercepted by Oakland-Craig’s Lincoln Benne to seal the win for the White squad.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Red Team got on the scoreboard with a pitch and catch from Norfolk Catholic’s Carter Janssen to Lutheran High’s Tate Collison.
But the White Team broke open scoring when they scored on a direct snap to fullback Hank Hudson of Boone Central.
White scored under a minute later, with Boone Central’s James Fogleman connecting with Elkhorn Valley’s Dawson Hansen to give the White a 14-7 lead at the half.
After adding a Parker Borer rushing TD in the third, the Red Team struggled to regain their footing, until Sudbeck’s dive.
