SOUTH SIOUX CITY — Alice “Joann” McKernan, 84, South Sioux City, formerly of Concord, died Oct. 24, 2022, at a local care facility, surrounded by loved ones.
Services were held Oct. 29 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, South Sioux City. Visitation was one hour prior to the service.
Joann was born May 24, 1938, in Milford, to Ben and Lois (Shearer) Hansjosten. She married James L. McKernan April 7, 1954, in South Sioux City. The two were proudly married for nearly 68 years, until James passed in February of this year. The couple made their home in Concord for many years before returning to South Sioux City a few years ago.
Together the pair enjoyed traveling and camping, as well as spending their winters in Texas.
Joann loved cheering for her grandchildren at their sporting events, and attended anytime that she could. She also enjoyed watching the Nebraska Huskers play. In her free time, she enjoyed attending bluegrass concerts and singing in various choirs.
She also loved reading, bird watching, crocheting, quilting, and baking. Survivors include her daughter, Terri (Terry) Hexamer, Alton, Iowa, and their children, Rebecca, Steve (Samantha), Brenda, Shawn, Ethan and Joey; daughter, Jodi (Chris) Imafidon, Scottsdale, Ariz., and their children, Alexander, Nicole and Victoria; daughter, Lynda (Don) Ferris, South Sioux City, and their children, Michael, Jeremiah, Angela, James (Amanda) and Donald (Jenny); grandson, Joshua (Lael) McKernan; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Widick, Joyce Bauer, June Schelb and Benita Sample; sisters-in-law, Ellen Perdu, Elaine Moore, Pat Kampfe, Veronica Grijalba and Sandy McKernan; brothers-in-law, Robert (Karen) McKernan, Dennis McKernan and Kevin (Shelly) Arnold; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James McKernan; her parents; a son, James McKernan; a granddaughter, Catherine Simmons; a brother, Peter Hansjosten; a sister, Lois Reynolds; and a brother-in-law, Richard McKernan.
