Alfred E. Steffen

ATLANTIC, Iowa — Alfred E. Steffen, 80, Atlantic, Iowa, died Oct. 23, 2018, at Heritage House, Atlantic. Memorial services were held Oct. 27, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care, Atlantic. A Memorial Service will also be at 10:30 a.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, with Rev. Russ Lambert officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., Nov. 3. Burial of his cremated remains will be in the Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Coleridge, with military honors provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114 and the American Legion Riders. Alfred was born Nov. 20, 1937, in Hartington, the son of Ernest Carl and Ethel (Coleman) Steffen. He attended school and graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1955. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army where he served from 1955-1957. After being discharged from the service, he joined the Iowa State Patrol and served as a State Trooper for 20 years. He then became a restaurant owner in Atlantic. He owned the T&C Drive In and Country Kitchens. Al was also the co-owner and operator of AK Ambulance, Atlantic. Alfred married Marlys Joan Palmer March 18, 1972, in Omaha. He was a resident of Atlantic and Ottumwa, Iowa, Osage Beach, Mo., and Sun City, Ariz. He was active in the Elks, Moose, Eagles and American Legion, and was a member of the Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing, woodworking, golfing, bowling and boating. Al enjoyed the times vacationing with Jerry and Connie Wiedenfeld. Family and friends were very important. Alfred is survived by his wife, Marlys Steffen, Atlantic, Iowa; daughters, Cindy Willingham, Atlantic, Iowa; and Karla (Tim) Akers, Anita, Iowa; grandchildren, Misha Watts, Springfield, Mo.; Phillip (Diann) Shull, Columbia, Mo.; Kara Shull of Manhattan, N.Y.; and Benjamin (Sarah) Shull, Chicago, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ethel Steffen; his sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Ray Wiedenfeld and Geraldine and Duane Purcell.
