2023 4-H Clover Kid camp held

HARTINGTON — The June 6 Clover Kid Camp hosted 46 Cedar County 4-H Clover Kids and 20 youth and adult volunteers at the Hartington Felber Park Shelter House for the annual Cedar County 4-H Clover Kid Camp. The event is sponsored by the Cedar County 4-H Council.

Jackie Steffen, Nebraska Extension Early Childhood educator, and Megan Hanefeldt, Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development educator, coordinated the event for Clover Kids, ages 5-7, enrolled in 4-H.

At the camp, Clover Kids participated in a series of five educational sessions during the afternoon to develop their skills through a “learn-by-doing” approach. They learned about chickens and ducks and what is required to show them at the fair.

They created a mindfulness glitter bottle and learned what mindfulness is and participated in calming exercises and a mindful listening activity. During the electrical circuit session, youth learned about open and closed circuits and created a simple circuit poster. The Clover Kids learned about the life cycle of a zucchini seed, made a zucchini garden stake, taste tested zucchini breads, and were able to take home a zucchini plant to plant in their own gardens. And, things got a little prickly as youth learned facts about cacti and made a pool noodle cactus in a bucket.

Projects made during the camp will be displayed at the Cedar County Fair and earn a rainbow ribbon placing.
