LINCOLN — Ethan Steiner, a seventh grade student at Hartington Public School, was one of several winners of the 10th annual Law Day Essay Contest jointly sponsored by the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, its Center for Law-Related Education, and the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Besides being involved in Student Council, Steiner participates in football, cross-country, basketball, track, band, choir, Jazz band and pep band. He has earned a position on the A/B Honor Roll and is a member of 4-H, Archery Club, Robotics Club, the Junction Youth Center, Teens for Christ and Relay for Life.

Steiner will be attending a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion April 23, accompanied by his parents and Lillian Rickett, media specialist at Hartington Public School, who was a great benefit to Steiner as he researched and wrote his paper.

HARTINGTON — What many hope was the final winter storm of the season last Thursday did not help a county that is still hurting from and learning the total impact of last month’s flooding.

Cedar County still had approximately 20 miles worth of roads closed before the most recent storm hit, but a wintery mix of rain, sleet, and snow caused County officials to announce a temporary closing of all county dirt roads from Thursday into the weekend.

That has since been lifted, but officials say the storm was the exact opposite of the dry weather conditions that are direly needed right now.

“Extremely terrible timing,” said Cedar County Highway Superintendent Carla Schmidt.
